    Making KDE faster.....?

I keep hearing about how much speed improvements you get when compiling KDE. Right now I have KDE 2.2.1 installed and used as my daily DE. How do I go about compiling 2.2.2 from source and make it FASTER!( damn celeron 366...) What files do I need to download and is there anything I should be looking out for to make sure I dont fuck up the working install? Thanks!
