Thread: A little security help please

Re: A little security help please

Damn! A little annoyed with me huh??
I fear you may have become dependant on my assistance, unable to think for yourself.

Like I said I have a nice little text file that explains the permissions by u+rwx, a+rwx, etc, but no idea about the numbers way of doing it. I will look it up and read though.
Once you learn the numbers way, it's simpler. As much as I'd love to get into how chmod works, and what those numbers mean, you have to figure it out on your own.

    Proper bang path??
    Hint: Bang!

Is that another manual to read up on?
    Probably.

but to be honest RTFM is not the answer to all questions.
    I disagree.

An example of how to do it IS MUCH MORE helpful.
Probably, but I have better things to do than sit around all day teaching you everything I know.

I really dont know much at all about scripting and programming and really dont have time to learn how to program right now (damn cisco classes kick my ass)
I'm not asking you to master scripting. I'm asking you to get a clue.

So with no faillog that means no one has ever failed to log in? I tried logging in with a fake name and a fake pass, but still no entry in faillog.
That means that nobody has failed to log in since you created the faillog file. Try logging in with a real user, but a wrong password.

And last off, thanks alot man, even though u are pretty rude to me, you helped alot
    Me, rude? No, just impatient.

Almost forgot...why would all these ports be open?
It scares me that you have daemons running and don't know what they are.

135/139 is just netbios/samba stuff right?
It's your computer, you tell me. You can run anything you want on any port.

    Any ideas on these?
    No.

Here is the manpage for chmod.

    Itīs pretty easy. r=4 w=2 x=1 so rwx=7 (4+2+1) and r-x=5 (4+1).

chmod 777 means that everyone can do anything to the file, it gets the permission -rwxrwxrwx.

chmod 750 gives it the permission -rwxr-x---. This means the owner can do anything with it, the other members of the group the file belongs to can read and execute it and everyone else canīt do a thing to it.

Probably It could also have something to do that his technique to have a wheel group is less proper than editing /etc/pam.d/su

    Code:
    $ ls -alF /etc/pam.d
ls: /etc/pam.d: No such file or directory
    Good one, Vince.

yeah that's a shame LFS doesn't have PAM installed... Too bad, cause the security stuff you can get is quite good.
