    Apache Mod_SSL sucks...

okay it doesn't suck if it is working, but I can't get it to work. *I followed the online docs and created my own certificate, key and signed it blah blah blah. *Then when I make the necessary changes in my httpd.conf and restart apache it starts to connect and gives my certificate info but then fails and says

Failed to connect, unkown SSL error (-12227)

    help anyone ???

I dont know what distro you are using but I just (today) installed Apache-ssl. It is, however, not the same as Apache mod_ssl. With debian it was simply an apt-get install apache-ssl and wablam i had an ssl apache server. I would check out http://www.apache-ssl.org

Did you install from source? I just got SSL working today on a test server, but did everything from source? Try compiling from source if you have not already done so. You will also need the source for openssl. Read the INSTALL and READMEs that come with the apache, mod_ssl and openssl tar ball. They are pretty clear, and a simple setup is rather easy.

If you installed from source, I'm assuming that after you ran the configure script you did a:
    make
    make certificate
    make install

When you start apache, you need to do a apachectl startssl.

I've had no problems at all with mod_ssl, but I'm still having problems with my certificate. (It's still from SnakeOil.com, or whatever the defaults are_
