    Apache and dynamic dns

    Hey guys,

    I've managed to get my linux box rebuilt and this time added apache and all the goodies to it. However, I am having troubles with apache and having a dynamic ip. I do have an account with dyndns.org and have an address that points to the current ip address. ( http://gotpenguin.dyndns.org )

    I am not exactly sure how to set apache up with this name. I dont really get the fully qualified domain name part. ???Could someone please explain this and how it relates to apache and other things like mail it would help me out alot.

    On a side note.....is it possible to set up virtual hosts with a dynamic ip using the dynamic dns people??

    That's easy, set apache to be a standalone server, and tell it the servername is localhost, don't specify any Listen IP-setting, just that it is bound to port 80 (or what ever port you want it runnign on)

    quoted from: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/vhosts/name-based.html
    NameVirtualHost *

    <VirtualHost *>
    ServerName www.domain.tld
    DocumentRoot /www/domain
    </VirtualHost>

    <VirtualHost *>
    ServerName www.otherdomain.tld
    DocumentRoot /www/otherdomain
    </VirtualHost>

    Re: Apache and dynamic dns

    Oh, forgot about the mail/dns thingys..

    Here is what is needed..
    Code:
    www.yourdomain.com. *IN * MX *5 *yourdomain.dyndns.org.
    www.yourdomain.com. *IN * CNAME *yourdomain.dyndns.org.
    Eventho it's _not_ following the correct bind8/9 specifications with the MX setting, it will be accepted. It just requires two dns lookups instead of one.
