i would place $20 bucks on dirt being the problem. if i gambled....
i use compressed air or alchol to clean all my stuff like that. yea just unplug it first and it should be okay.
I'm at home for a few weeks, and the family computer is doing the strangest thing. When you turn it on, after a few seconds a HORRIBLE grinding sound starts coming from the power supply, and the PC speaker goes crazy. It happens every time it's turned on, but if you blow really really hard in the ventilation slots for the power supply and give it a few smacks, it starts up without a hitch. It goes smoothly ONLY if you both blow and smack. My theory is that there's dust clogging the damn thing...it hasn't been cleaned in 5 years. Is this a viable theory? Anything I should know before I start poking around in there? I know nothing whatsoever about power sources except that you shouldn't touch when it's plugged in. I'll be trying things tomorrow, so any help that can be offered soon is appreciated. Thanks.

And for the love of God, if you disassemble the PSU to clean it... DON'T TOUCH anything... I did that once... I will never forget it.. BAD BAD BAD MISTAKE..
