Configuring my server for access from work.

Hi all,

I just finished installing Red Hat 7.2 on another machine and installed the Networking packages. I want to set it up so I can connect to it from work. What would be the best way to do this?

Have you looked into ssh? That might be your best bet, as it is secure.

Yah, if you have no bandwidth at home, it would be console only, and ssh would be the ticket. If you have adsl or cable tho, ssh is still the way to go 'cause you can export a X display session to your local machine, giving you the GUI, and it is still secure, etc. *and* faster than VNC.

I have a cable connection, so no problem there. Unfortunately, I'm using Windows 2000 at work and not Linux (I have a Linux test box setup in my cube so I may end up using that at a later date). Will using Windows 2000 to do this cause any problems? Is there anything special I need to know?

Win2k should be fine (well as fine as doze can be), you'll need a win32 ssh client, such as PuTTY. I'm thinking of doing this myself, let us know how it goes.

Thanks to all the great info I'm getting, the Linux box at home should be configured tonight. Then, tomorrow from work, I'll try to connect.

you can always use telnet as a last resort till you get ssh up and running.

Yah, putty is a great free win32 ssh client. And you can get X-Win32 from tucows - its a great win32 X server so you can get your GUI going from home at work, etc.

I use it here at work with the evaluation version - it limits you to a 2 hr. connection.

I use a ssh client from my win2000 box at work to login to my linux box at home

If you want to see the desktop on your server box, try VNC. I believe it is just as secure as SSH. Otherwise, go with SSH.
