    Strange HDD space reporting...

I understand that formatting a drive uses some space, and the whole deal about using 1024 bits for 1k vs. 1000 bits, but I am seeing something odd on my backup server. This server has four 300Gb drives in RAID10, so I should be seeing 600Gb (theoretically). Well, when I df -h, I see:
    Size: 550Gb Used: 129Mb Free: 522Gb

I am willing to live with the 550Gb, no problem. But, how on earth does 550Gb - 129Mb = 522Gb???

    hello,
i am not sure - what is the output of du -h?
    telnet mtrek.game-host.org 1701

    root@backups:/# du -h /home
    4.0K /home/ftp
    4.0K /home/lost+found
    12K /home/ron
    8.0K /home/stephanie
    32K /home

Strange, indeed... The rest of the system is on an attached IDE drive. This RAID array is used only for backup storage.

    Odd.

That seems a bit much, but I could see a bit of a drift (few hundred megs tops) due to too many smaller files not using up enough of each inode. For example 4K inodes and alot of 3k files. Thats 1K wastage per file and can add up. But a few dozen GB is a bit much for that (although could be the issue, but unlikely).

Yeah, it is definitely strange. /home is only 32k, so... Hell, 'ron' or 'stephanie' haven't even logged into this machine yet, so there aren't many files at all. Oh well, I guess I will just use it as is. Not much else I can do...

du only shows "used space" so if your system is brand new, I'd believe it to be only 32K.

What if you check with fdisk and see if the system itself is seeing all the disk space?

Okay, I checked with fdisk, and the system sees the full 599.99GB. So, just for grins, I reformatted the partition with XFS. Lo and behold, instead of 550GB total I now have 559GB. That in itself is no big deal. However, my 'disc used' and 'disc free' now jive. I am showing a total of 559GB, with 128k used, and 559GB free. Maybe an ext3/RAID issue?
