Is it possible? Can I go as far as buying one with Linux preinstalled?
Thanks pbharris, but both laptops on that site are over the budget. I'm looking for something in the $800-1200 range. Any other suggestions? A no OS laptop would be just fine as long as I can install Linux on it.
I thought those were mighty steep in price too,
I would grab off a used or refunrbished IBM one, we have IBM laptops at work running linux, there were some I saw when I did a google search for linux laptops at www.dealtime.com, i tried to post the link but it was several miles long...
This is all I found.. All GNU/Linux, all the time

I've put Linux on several Dell lattitude CPI series laptops and on a older inspiron - perhaps you can find one used/refurbished in your budget?
www.apple.com
it's 1299 but it is nice.
Damn straight!! I may actually buy an Apple since they got smart and adopted UNIX (well, BSD, close enough for me).
But to help the original poster, try IBM. Excellent notepads, and they support Linux. Their tech support can actually be useful should the situation arise.
you can get linux installed on it too

Actually they raped BSD and develop the propretary GUI on it ... But still ......they got smart and adopted UNIX (well, BSD, close enough for me).
Like Gorn said, you can run Linux on it and I think it's called PPC (I'm not sure) and the other one is "yellow dog" ... Apple has good hardware but price is too high for me ......
