    Re: joystick won't load...

I'll have a look around Google and other resources today and post back later if I find something that may help.

    Re: joystick won't load...

    Hi Paul...

I seem to remember in /var/log/messages on one of my home pc's with a SB PCI-128, there is mention of the joystick and the port address during the boot messages.

I did some web searching and found a bit of info that may help.

It is suggested you disable PnP OS in the bios for the Soundblaster Live and gameports. (You probably already know this)

    /usr/src/linux-2.4.16/Documentation/input/joystick.txt

    http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~vojtech/joystick/

    insmod soundcore
    insmod emu10k1
    insmod joydev
    insmod gameport
    insmod emu10k1-gp
    insmod analog

    Re: joystick won't load...

    Hi mdwatts!
Well - um - I don't know how to break this to ya....

THE DAMN THING IS BROKEN!! I brought it with me to work to test on under windows and while windows would tell me there is a joystick there. I have had it for about 5 years and it has never has a problem and it was not until I was realizing we were doing everything to to try it on another machine. i have winodws here but i can't bring myself to boot it up. Many apoligies for wasting you time. Many thanks too!

btw - are you mdwatts the 5th yet at LNO ?

    Re: joystick won't load...

It's broken? Funny how we never first think of checking something as obvious as the hardware not working. Is it too late to add a joystick to your letter to Santa?

No need to apologize. Always a pleasure to TRY to help someone that has spent so much of their own time and knowledge helping others both here and at LNO. Besides I now know something about joysticks and Linux.

My 4th logon id at Linuxnewbie is now in LNO heaven. All my emails asking for assistance go unanswered and since their email system is also down, the new password is not mailed out whenever I attempt to register again. I still read all the threads there and if possible, I offer assistance via personal email. All I can do there now.

Guess I'll be hanging around here for the time being. Crossposters beware. ;D

    Regards

    Edit

Besides I owed you for your tip on configuring the kernel for power down. I did post a thank-you note in the other thread, but you may not have seen it.

As I explained there, all my stock kernels were setup with acpi as a module and poweroff would work. Any of the custom kernels I installed would not have a option of configuring acpi as a module or it would not compile correctly. I did try multiple variations of acpi/apm whenever I compiled a new kernel though none seemed to work. Every kernel compile I would try something different.

Thanks to your suggestion you had posted for someone else, my home pc and both my work pc's now power off after shutdown.

    Re: joystick won't load...

    Hi Mike!
When it is new I will check the hardware, but this thing had been working for years. ah well! I think Santa just might be able to help me. /me puts on Santa hat

your 4th one now? I know mdwatts the III had well over 2000 posts. that is just sickening. I noticed one of the biggest forums (General Linux Issues) has been been gone for days too. I am glad there is LinuxJunior. I wonder if Sensei knew that the BBS would be neglected...

I saw that on the power down issue - excellent! I know I tried 2 or 3 times to get the right combination. I guess I was lucky!

Anyway - it is great to have someone like yourself hanging out at this board, I figure people will go where they can get help. I know I can't answer every question

    later!

    Re: joystick won't load...

    Hi Paul...

I had roughly 8,900 posts with all my accounts at LNO. Damn shame. Oh well. We all miss Sensei. He would have had the forums and my accounts fixed in no time at all.

I tried so many combinations of acpi/apm in the kernel config and your suggestion most likely would have been the only one I had remaining to try. Nice to finally have it working.

Thanks for welcoming me to LJR. I hope I can be of some help with my limited knowledge. Maybe between the 2 of us we can assist someone in getting their mouse working in X.

    Regards
    Mike

One thing I've noticed is that some not only crosspost across forums, but also across LNO and LJR. Funny. Not that I've ever taken any notice of crossposting.
