and does it have to have audio on the board? i plan to use an sblive card.
you can get it w/o the onboard audio. i did, i also have a sb live.
Avoid onboard crap. Unless its like the $500 Tyan dual AMD with actually decent hardware, screw it. I have never had a board with good onboard audio/modem/video/lan. The one exception I see is the Tyan -- SCSI 3 controller, 2 EIDE ATA-133 controllers, 2 3COM 10/100 sockets, some audio and graphics that wasnt as impressive. The one thing though I always hated dealing with is the fact that these onboard everything mobos tend to skimp on pci slots royally. Like 2 or 3. I was lucky when I was a complete moron with hardware -- I had a 4 PCI slot one (first IBM mobo).
ASUS has never given me a problem that can be directed at ASUS directly. MSI's are in two of my four boxes and are making me happy.
thanks guys, i'll go with the asus
I have the asus A7V266 DDR w/audio and the audio is better than my old sb128. (It has nice 5.1 surround aswell). It's also regarded as one of the best boards for O/Cing.
Which Asus did you go for?
I would really really really strongly recommend looking at a SMP mobo, especially since you can do dual AMD chips now... once you go smp, you'll never go back. My dual P2-450 box "feels" faster than my single 933, same amount of ram, in both Slack and Win2k.
For anyone else who may read this:
SHUTTLE BOARDS ARE CRAP
Or at least the AI61. I've had nothing but problems. A friend of mine's sister, who got the same board has also had nothing but problems.
