Fan problems: Sony Vaio Desktop and Linux

Install goes smooth, both slack and redhat picks up my nic and hardware but the fan is loud. I have done searches on google and had no luck finding a solution. I have read some about the fan, something to do with hibernation or something (could never find a direct fix for it about linux). Any suggestions or helpful urls would be great. The model of the computer is PCV-RX550. The pc is new and XP works fine on it, just hoping I can use Linux on it cause Windows is boring.

if the fan is loud, try swapping it with another. *Or move where it is getting voltage from and try lowering the voltage. *If you know electronics you know you have a +12V, -12V, +5V, -5V, and ground lines with the red line going to one *and the black going to another. *The total voltage will be the Red - Black. * So you can get a nice voltage by playing with that. *For example, a nice 24 volts can be applied by putting the Red on the +12V and the black on the -12V. *Note that a 24V rated fan would be needed for the example to enjoy the fan for more than a week *Been there done that. *5v fans hate being wired at 24V. *Now if it is rated at 12, try going to 10 or 7 volts. *If the fan is dying, just replace it alogether -- save yourself the time and effort of dicking with your atx connector.

Thanks for your reply. I know nada about electronics. The fan should be fine though, the pc is new I bought it a few weeks ago. I have installed XP and 2000 both on it just to test the fan noise I get with Linux on it and it is quite with Windows on it. I may install Linux on it again and test it for a day or so to see if the noise goes away or if I can find a way to prevent it. Any other suggestions I could try?

So your saying that it only appears when Linux is booting? Thats odd. If it a pm controlled thing, disable apm. Check to see how it is wired. I can help. I need to put my eet degree to good use

Yeah, I dunno why the fan was so loud, no matter which distro I put on it, it was loud. I use some software in Windows so I would have had dual boot it anyways.

VMWare runs non directX stuff really well these days. As long as you have a 500+ Mhz box and 256MB Ram, you will have no real issue of performance hits. I have been using that off and on at work. (My box here sucks. A 233 P1, 128MB Ram) If it wasnt for the fact I have 4 different DB's running on this damn thing all the time (MS Access garbage) I would just use vmware for the little I need Win98 for.
