Looks like a disk error, do you have the right settings in the bios?
This may or may not help:

I just got an old P60. When trying to boot the famous "Non-system disk or disk error..." message was appearing (Windows was installed). I tried installing Debian on it. Everything goes fine until the first reboot. Lilo prints "L 40 40 40 ..." ad infinitum (both IDE controllers, installed to the MBR or to the root partition's boot sector).
Does anyone know what is wrong with this computer ? It it the motherboard ? Any suggestions what I could try to fix it ?

Bingo ! Setting "LBA" instead of "CHS" translation fixed that...Looks like a disk error, do you have the right settings in the bios?
