hmm .. maybe a fdformat /dev/fd0 and mkfs.ext2 /dev/fd0 can help .. so the disk gets formatted and ext2'ed
hi,
when installing debian, it gets to the point where it wants to install lilo so i choose mbr since i have nothing else on the drive. it wont write to the hard drive so i go to make a boot floppy and it wont write to a blank formatted non-protected floppy as well. nothing but a simple dos partition is on this drive i believe. any pointers?

So this happens from inside the installer, right? Maybe you can try to get to a different tty (ALT+Fn ,n={1,2,...}) and try to install lilo manually. Use /sbin/lilo -v to get some more detailed error messages about what goes wrong. When you get to the terminal have a look at /etc/lilo.conf first to make sure it's doing what you want.
