For those who like IRC, but don't like its insecure nature (plain-text transmissions), check out Silcnet. They took the Irssi client and added a lot of features which cryptography fans will enjoy (signatures, fingerprints, etc.)
There are clients for Linux, the *BSD's, Mac and Windows

I consider computer cryptography to be very important as everyone gets wired more and more these days: I want my privacy. Also, if you are part of the people who think terrorists could be stopped if they didn't have free access to cryptographic software, then you are wrong my man. They just need to find a brilliant and mathematical mind (easy) that knows programming a bit (most mathematicians are familiar with programming nowadays) and give them the white-paper of blowfish and ask them to write their own crypto program. Or they could ask them to design a whole new one.

Of course I wouldn't want people spying on me all the time, but comparing irc (unencrypted chat) to having microphones placed in your house is kinda silly (I'm sure there's a logging function in silcnet, too).

I like to maintain a reasonable level of security on my computer (there's no possible way to connect to it; I closed all the ports), and a reasonable level of security in my life. If someone was watching me in my room while I listened to my loud music, it's probably because I invited them in the room, just as in irc, where you kinda have to invite people into your channel, or you're invited into a channel, and you permit others to view your conversations. I don't like having people visibly spying or stalking me, but if I really don't have anything to hide, and there's nothing that people can get from my box, they'll eventually go away (what's more boring than watching a whole lot of nothing?).

Sorry, but I always find it odd when people seem not to care about security. *I gotta admit that I am somehow paranoid, but when Kint and I say stupid things in #hackcanada, we something like to keep that private. I thought people liked to have even the most meaningless conversations private. I mean, I would freak out if someone called me and said "I'm Jennifer Aniston! *FAP FAP FAP FAP* *click*". You get a phone call from some anonymous guys who tells you thing about you. I would HATE that.
