mplayer & libjpg, binutils, etc. versions

I (somehow??) successfully downloaded/compiled/installed mplayer and played a mpeg file from CD (my first TRUE Linux success!)

However, I didn't have any luck playing a VCD from a CD, so thought I would re-read the instructions given by the mplayer author. *There are dependent files that I'm trying to check the version of (i.e. XFree86, gcc, make, etc.).

So far, my XFree86, gcc, make are of the proper version, but I can't find the binutils file or the libjpg, libogg, libvorbis, etc. files. *I've tried, as root, find -name binutils* but yielded no results.

I show below the results of find -name libjpeg*:

Are you using a packaged based distro? If so,, find out if the package that includes those files is installed.

Mplayer has been a rough one for me as well. As I get one thing working it takes 2x longer to get the next one working. It gets irritating after a while.

Yup, mplayer is a bitch. After my unsuccessful tries, I moved over to Xine and it's working perfectly .... ok, Xine made problems too, but in the end it was way easier to install than mplayer.
But now that I have xine up and running I'll give mplayer a shot - linux is no system for someone who gives up

Btw: As Shotty said, what distro are you using? At Suse the package you are searching is called "libjpeg" and as far as I can tell from your output you already have them installed.

Black can you help shed some light on my Xine? It loads just fine and then freezes up my entire system. My thoughts are leading towards sound problems but...

And Xine was installed via RH7.3 initial configuration
