Thread: apt-get a downloaded .deb file.

  1. #1

    apt-get a downloaded .deb file.

Ok, I just downloaded the Opera 6 .deb, but what do I do with it? "apt-get install <filename>" certainly isn't working.

Re: apt-get a downloaded .deb file.

    Use dpkg.

    dpkg -i opera.deb

    Oh ok, thanks

First I went here, then I followed the links to Opera 6 for Linux

Hmmm, opera doesn't want to work properly in Debian...

It's weird. Everything is working fine but cookies. Opera refuses to accept any cookies (even when I tell it to accept all cookies). At first I thought that the problem was with opera 6 TP 1, so I downgraded to opera 5, but had the same problems. Since opera 5 worked fine in Mandrake, i guess it has something to do with the packaging.

I'm going to try downloading the tar.gz package... that wouldn't be source, would it? Or is that a slack package? Ah crap...

the tar.gz is just the binary package, it has a simple install script in it.
for the cookies, maybe the permissions arent set correct ..

I don't know why they wouldn't be. I'm using the same /home partition that I was in Mandrake. It worked fine then, and the permissions haven't changed...

Thanx for the link, got it and installed it, I just ran dpkg -i <operafile> and installed it straight over my opera 5, and it works well, I am using the Libranet distro which is Debian based.
    Cheers
