    Re: How do I add.....?

actually, compiling mplayer is very easy
u just have to read the instructions, follow them and u'll end up with an excellent video player for linux... that's all
I don't usually worry about compiling but if there is a .deb file that's always more desirable. I guess I just paid too much attention to the bad experiences. Thanks for your input !

actually, downloading a binary of mplayer (wheter it's .deb or .rpm) is illegal according to their website

    this is from their site:

    Buggy debian packages Gabucino 2001.12.23

Warning to the Open Source Community :

Please do not use unofficial debian packages of MPlayer that can be found scattered on the Net. Especially avoid packages of Christopher Marillat. He - ignoring our repeated requests, and his provider's request - continues to distribute his home-made buggy (browse the mplayer-users mailing list archives, for users complaining about mysterious crashes, segfaults, reboots using those packages. Or here is a direct link of a recent bugreport.)

He also denies the existence of all there reports. Mr. Marillat, would you PLEASE stop making our development harder ? We'd appreciate it, thanks.

Also if you download MPlayer binaries from him, be aware that you (and he) commit an illegal act (though probably nobody will kill you for it), for a compiled mplayer binary contains codes with license violations, and it's illegal to distribute it.

IMPORTANT NOTICE : the MPlayer Team doesn't take ANY responsibility, and does NOT provide any support for bugs, damaged software or hardware, or backdoors when using those deb packages !

The same applies to RPM packages as well.
another reason not to download binaries of mplayer:
Q: Are there rpm/deb/... packages of MPlayer?
A: You can make a .deb package for yourself, check section 6.1. It's _STRONGLY_ discouraged to use precompiled packages of MPlayer, since it (currently) _highly_ depends on compile-time options and optimizations! Precompiled packages are COMPLETELY unsupported by the MPlayer team!

Thanks Ralinx. I will just compile it then, I don't have a problem with that. (Just to note though I am still adding the sources that it (mplayer) is on because I would like to. That was my original intention to add sources.) I appreciate the heads up, it not my goal to steal or install a program that may have been altered to create a back door.

    Hi Sarah31
edit /etc/apt/sources.list and add the lines:

    Code:
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
    deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US testing/non-US main contrib non-free
    for mplayer:
    Code:
    deb http://marillat.free.fr/ stable main
thats to upgrade stuff to woody (debain testing)
    per the page at :
    http://www.debian.org/releases/testing/
    Yes!

Thanks PB, I just loaded Libranet because getting ahold of Woody on cd was turning out to be a major pain. So far so good I guess, but it's waaay dated

I think it just took 40 minutes to update mozilla to 0.97. At this rate I may never catch up...
