qmail problem

Hi, I am learning Linux. *I have installed Red Hat 7.1 on a Athlon 1400. *All went very well! *
I then decided to setup a email server using qmail. *I use the howto located at www.lifewithqmail.org. *Through various trials and errors I believe i got everything downloaded/compiled/configured,
Well maybe not configured. *After starting qmail (command qmailctrl start), I then ran qmailctl stat, qmailctl gave me the following errors:

/service/qmail-send: unable to open supervise/ok: file does not exist
/service/qmail-send/log: unable to open supervise/ok: file does not exist
/service/qmail-smtpd: unable to open supervise/ok: file does not exist
/service/qmail-smtpd/log: unable to open supervise/ok: file does not exist
messages in queue: 0
messages in but not preprocessed: 0

The last two lines seem to indicate that qmail is up and
running even though I messed up the configuration.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!

first let me give you a nice welcome to Linux Junior - I hope we can be of help.

are you using it as a sendmail replacement or as a pop mail server? If a pop mail server then look at the files in /etc/xinitd.d/ - there are a bunch of files and each one cooresponds to a different service, as user root open a file in the editor of your choice and edit the ones which look like they may be affecting your mail server - in the file there is a line which says
disable = XXX

change whatever the XXX is to no, you may need to do this to a few files.


i am not positive if this will work since i have not used qmail. you may want to ask this in the server and netwroking formum.

Thanks for your reply, pbharris, and thanks for the welcome.
The qmail program is being setup as a sendmail replacement. I looked at the files located in the /etc/xinitd.d subdirectory and none of the files there seemed to related to qmail.

Is it OK to simply repost this same question to the server and networking forums. Or should I wait for any additional replies?

If you reposted in another forum while leaving the original thread here, I guess it would still be crossposting. I'm not sure on this bbs if you can delete your own threads. If you could, then perhaps it might be best to post again in the appropriate forum as pbharris suggested.

I'm in the same boat as pbharris as I've never used qmail. Does the qmail support site have any faq's or mailing lists? Maybe trying searching Google ( www.google.com/linux ) for those error messages.

Sorry as it's kinda hard to help someone when you're not familiar with the topic.

Since you're new to linux I'd suggest you just downloading and installing the qmail rpm for RH7.1. Compiling is funny, but it sometimes gets too funny.

My procedure would be:
- download qmail-[version].rpm
# rpm -e sendmail
# rpm -i qmail-[version].rpm
- fine-tune the conf file
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/qmail start

You'd learn less but would be up&running faster.
