I followed this site to tell if I have a winmodem.
http://winmodem.nhvt.net/identify.htm
Is this the definitive way to tell? According to its technique, I do not have a winmodem. But I'm not completely convinced because I'm having trouble with my modem under linux.
The reason I have doubts about my modem is that I was following a guide that said to do the following.
/usr/sbin/pppd
It said normally this would produce ten lines of garbage.
I tried this on my linux laptop and it worked, but on this desktop it did not work.
My modem is a Conexant V.90/56K Telephony Modem.
Was that site correct or is there another way I can tell if I have a winmodem?

Never mind, I have a winmodem.
That site I mentioned in my first post was wrong.
You should go here:
http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/20020204a.html
and it will tell you if you have a winmodem or not. I should have known that it was a winmodem when I coudln't get my modem working in dos. :'(
