Can you (define) your own function in, say, the .emacs?

Sure. I'm not exactly a lisp wizard but I find this site an amzing resource when it comes to .emacs There are many excellent examples that you can use as a starting point to your own custom .emacs file. The site is part of the emacs web ring so you'll find lots of links to other resources.

Some people got some crazy .emacs files! One has 10,000 lines and started with the first version of GNU Emacs in 1985!!
