    Upgrade to 7.2 and pcmcia errors in boot.log

    I had redhat 7.0 and my NIC card was working. I upgraded to Redhat 7.2. I don't think the kernel is pick up the hardware.

    Ichecked the boot.log and found the following:

    Mar 10 11:03:27 madmen pcmcia: /lib/modules/2.4.7-10/pcmcia/i823465.o:
    Mar 10 11:03:27 madmen pcmcia: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorredt module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
    Mar 10 11:03:27 madmen pcmcia: init_module: No such device
    Mar 10 11:03:27 madmen pcmcia: /lib/modules/2.4.7-10/pcmcia/ds.o
    Mar 10 11:03:27 madmen pcmcia: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorredt module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
    Mar 10 11:03:27 madmen pcmcia: cardmgr.
    Mar 10 11:03:27 madmen pcmcia: init_module: Operation not permitted

    When I type lsmod, I get :
    Moduke * * * * *size * * * * * * * * *used by
    ide-cd * * * * * * 26592 * * * * * * *0 (autoclean)
    cdrom * * * * * * 29504 * * * * * * *0 (autoclean) [ide-cd]
    soundcore * * *4208 * * * * * * * *0 (autoclean)
    pcmcia_core 38392 * * * * * * *0

    My card is EtherLink III Lan + 33.6 modem pc card - 3c562c/3c563c rpm = kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.27-10

    Re: Upgrade to 7.2 and pcmcia errors in boot.log

    i hope this is not another wireless NIC... it should be 10baseT - right?
    okay!
    1st -the module should be i82365.o, not i823465.o if this is a mistake let us know, if not then it really needs to be corrected. you may wish to try a
    depmod -a to try and get the modules all happy, this module is for pcmcia services.

    any chance you have a back up of your /etc/modules.conf and /etc/pcmcia/config for rh7.0 ? this may be helpful incase any parameters need to be passed.

    Re: Upgrade to 7.2 and pcmcia errors in boot.log

    10baseT - Yes

    missed typed the i823465.o in posting - It is i82365.o

    When I type depmod -a, I get no info just the prompt.

    I might have a it on my old harddrive.

    Re: Upgrade to 7.2 and pcmcia errors in boot.log

    okay - good! i was hoping it was typo. what is in /etc/modules.conf and /etc/pcmcia/config ?

    Re: Upgrade to 7.2 and pcmcia errors in boot.log

    Modules.cong :
    Alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

    I have try " alias eth0 3c589_cs.o" in the modules.conf and no luck.

    There is alot of data in config. here are some entries:

    device "3c589_cs"
    * * * * class "network" module "3c589_cs"

    card "3Com 589 Eternet"
    * * * * *manfid 0x0101, 0x0589
    * * * * *bind "3c589_cs"

    card "3Com 3c562/3c563 Ethernet/Modem"
    * * * * manfid 0x0101, 0x0562
    * * * * bind "3c589_cs" to 0, "serial_cs" to 1

    Note: I add the next entry:
    card "3Com 3c562C/3c563C LAN+Modem Adapter"
    * * * * manfid 0x0101, 0x0562
    * * * * bind "3c589_cs" to 0, "serial_cs" to 1

    In config.opts, here are some data
    :
    include port 0x100-0x4ff, port 0xc00-0xcff

    exclude irq 4
    exclude irq 7
    exclude irq 12

    hello,
    hum - i know the entry in /etc/modules.conf should be alias eth0 3c589_cs. have you tried reseting it up using netconf ? it is a pretty easy to use graphical tool.

    Re: Upgrade to 7.2 and pcmcia errors in boot.log

    I replaced a 1.4g hard drive, I inserted it in the laptop.
    Information from my Redhat 7.0 harddrive:

    difference in config.opts:
    include port 0x100-0x4ff, port 0x800-0x8ff, port 0xc00-0xcff

    when I type lsmod:
    Moduke * * * * *size * * * * * * * * *used by
    ide-cd * * * * * * 23628 * * * * * * *0 (autoclean)
    serial_cs * * * * 5280 * * * * * * * *0 (unused)
    3c589_cs * * * 8372 * * * * * * * *1
    ds * * * * * * * * * *6280 * * * * * * * * 2 [serial_cs 3c589_cs]
    i82365 * * * * * * 21668 * * * * * * *2
    pcmcia_core *44160 * * * * * * *0 *[serial_cs 3c589_cs ds i82365]
    lockd * * * * * * * *31176 * * * * * * *1 (autoclean)
    sunrpc * * * * * * *52964 * * * * * * * 1 (autoclean) [lockd]

    When I type cardctl status:
    socket 0:
    * * 5V *16-bit PC Card
    * * *function 0: [ready], [up], [bat dead], [bat low], [reg attn]
    * * *function 1: [ready], [reg attn]
    socket 1:
    * * *no card

    When I type cardctl config:
    socket 0:
    * * * Vcc 5.0V * * Vpp 0.0V * * Vpp2 *0.0V
    * * * interface type is "memory and I/O"
    * * * irq *3 [exclusive] [level]
    * * * function 0:
    * * * * * * config base 0x1080
    * * * * * * * * option 0x47 status 0x00 pin 0x00 copy 0x00 ext 0x00
    * * * * * * io *0x0300-0x030f [16bit]
    * * * function 1:
    * * * * * * config base 0x1000
    * * * * * * option 0x47 status 0x08 pin 0x00 copy 0x00 ext 0x00
    * * * io 0x02fb-0x02ff [8bit]

    I changed the modules.conf to 3c589_cs.
    I also change the line in config.opts to
    include port 0x100-0x4ff, port 0x800-0x8ff, port 0xc00-0xcff

    Both changes did not help.

    http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/

    has good information
    man I hate PCMCIA LOL
    pb, I think if it were wireless I'd just drive my car into a barrier on the way home LOL

    OK

    with that being said lol
    Well at the moment, I'm on a win2k box so not going to be of a lot of help (not to mention I'm supposed to leave from work an hour ago ;D

    what does /var/log/messages tell you?
    What you can do is /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia -restart (I think) and see what kind of errors it spits at you (may want to dodge!)

    man I never did figure out the problem with those freakin' modules LOL

    if you rmmod 3c589_cs and then insmod 3c589_cs does it give errors? would assume not, but sometimes when you take something apart you break it :

    never did figure out ds.o arghhhh
