Looking for a new CMS for my website... suggestions?

Yeah, it looks OK now, but that's because I had to re-implement my old site because wordpress failed on me hardcore! Turns out that people could not see any images in the theme, and only could see the text. I checked my setup and it was because wordpress was set so that its URL was the machines IP address, not its domain name. So, when people typed: http://ttgale.com, all they would see was the text, and none of the links were working. I then changed it to ttgale.com, which did the trick, so if people actually typed in my URL, they would see all the images for the theme, and the links were fine. However, the biggest problem is that I now cant login or do anything with my site unless I am at another persons house (because I host the site myself, and its on the same internal network as my other computers). When I type in ttgale.com at my house, it brings up my router page. Anyway, so I had to pull off wordpress and reinstate e107. I think the problem is that wordpress handles its installed URL differently than e107 does.

Hey Beez, sorry to hear about your WP issues. Did you use a prebuilt template, or did you code you own? Just curious, because WP needs to know the template path to properly find the images. Honestly it sounds like a config issue more than an overall WP issue. I wouldn't mind helping you with setup if you want to take another try at it, but I understand if the whole experience has soured your toward WP. :-(

Upgrading is as easy as clicking a link in WP, they recommend backing everything up before the upgrade but I just tarball up the whole dir, upgrade then del tarbar, never had even the slightest issue.

Yeah I think it's the way that WP handles urls. I was using stock standard themes, and they all presented the same thing. The links also pointed to different file paths that didnt exist either. Basically, when a person clicked a link, their address bar would show 192.168.3.2/blabla.php instead of ttgale.com/blabla.php. I managed to get this fixed by changing my URL settings in WP to ttgale.com, but whenever I tried to edit wordpress or view it on my network, it wouldnt work because I cant access ttgale.com from within my network (the server is running on the same network). Meh, too much mucking around, so I managed to get a whole bunch of plugins for e107 that really spruced the site up a bit, and it is more blogable now!

Set your Linux /etc/hosts or Windows \whatever\hosts file on the client PC you are using to have ttgale.com point to 192.168.3.2 and you should be OK for seeing the site within your home network.

What are some of the reasons you like e107 beez? Just curious, I have never used it before.

I certainly don't know how e107 compares to other packages in terms of security, but I use it because it is a very COMPLETE package from the first install. It basically lets you blog, forum, download, picture gallery, etc from the word go. It is very easy to use, has lots of templates and plugins, and it seems to be very stable and fast. I have started having a look at some of its more advanced features, and it is now sorting content that I make quite well. No editing of code is necessary, though you can do it if you like.

The download section, forums, image gallery, blog, and features like polls and rss are included in the base install. So you dont have to have heaps of different things like phpbb, wordpress, coppermine, etc all installed seperately and integrate them manually.

I see strengths and weaknesses with both of these.

One, having all features built-in (forum,gallery,etc.) will get you up and running quickly and are maintained by the core (maybe?) developers, so there is some accountability for regular updates and bugfixes.

Two, having a plugin system where you have to manually add these features gives you the choice of deciding on what you want to add to the site rather than being told. Yes, its another step in the process but some people really like having that choice.

I think it really just comes down to using what you are comfortable with and getting good at it. I like Wordpress mainly because I have been using it for 5 years and I know it more-or-less inside and out, and I can get it to everything I need it to. This doesn't mean its the best solution out there.

Yeah, I think I am the same with e107 as you are with wordpress. I have been using e107 since the early 2000's (which is sadly almost 10 years now, makes me feel old). I just seem to know how to use it a little better than the other cms's I have tried. I was actually quite upset that I couldnt get wordpress to run the way I wanted it

Edit: just a quick note, thanks for showing me how to change my hosts file, that made the difference!

I tried to use TextPattern a while ago and ran into the same issue. It probably wasn't a very big issue, but I knew exactly how to fix it in Wordpress, so it sort of soured me toward that CMS, even though many people highly recommend it.
