Welcome to the forums! We have been seeing a lot of spammers recently, so it is good to have a real person join up!
Hey folks,
Guv here from Guvnr.com.
Can't believe I didn't come across LHN before. Have been dotting i's and crossing t's at the sheer comprehensive brilliance that is this site's networking guide, wanted to say thank you somewhere and then found this forum with 130k's ... so that's a lot of hellos.
I've been buggering up pc's for years but only made the break to Linux a couple of years ago, and properly more recently when I made the break for an unmanaged VPS .. I was so impressed with my shiny new Nginx box that I blogged the process in noob-speak, and hopefully that's handy to some, easily Googled...
Set up an Unmanaged VPS for Newbies - The VPS Bible
(... I am always grateful for feedback and suggestions as this is a kind of living animal, not something written/forgotten.)
Since then I've written an intensive Karmic setup guide, encouraging terminal use, and am currently writing a bunch of proxy guides, again all with a newbie slant.
... I guess my small contribution to opensource, having been helped myself *so much* over the years by onliners, is to help wean people off proprietary using simple language, which generally is all I am capable of anyhow.
Tx again .. I've not explored far here yet but, Christmas came early, that network guide alone is an absolute corker.

tx Peter .. appreciate that.
Hello and welcome also! I will agree that the tutorials here are top-notch! We have Peter to thank for that, I am not totally sure if he wrote all of them, but I am positive that it was no small amount of work to get them all here.
...one thing guv, 'corker', thats a new one
Valencia and London? You must travel a bit then?
tx jro .. and a mighty tx to Peter if he wrote that networking guide. have been tying myself up in knots trying to configure a broken network, bridged with openvpn .. must have surfed close to 100 pages.
i saw nothing remotely as comprehensive as this guide. an especially tricky topic spelled out simply, quite rare.
I'm, well, not the model geek, and truth is it feels rather odd to have become quite so excited about NICS and whatnot. Comprehension is a wonderful thing.
Valencia and London, yes, long legs no quips .. my manor may be Med-side, but my landlord pours only the beloved barleyed Thames. And after all, some biz just oughtn't to be done online - and the missus agrees!
Must excuse my diction .. went astray somewhere or other (quite possibly down the pub.)
Wow, I almost didn't understand anything in that second-to-last paragraph
What is Med-side?(if you don't mind me askin)
aah, yes, sorry jro .. I mean, beside the Mediterranean, that's where Valencia is, and me with it. Then again, my local pub remains in London, together with enough clients to form an excuse to shuttle about a bit.
You're in PA, huh, I imagine a beautiful place. I used to live very close, a few miles, from Penn, north-west of London, and William Penn's village. I guess he managed to leave just before Suez!
I know the States well (tho not your neck of the woods), and fondly, was even in the phone book for a while in a delicious little place called Ashland, in Oregon. But how our languages are splendidly different. When I turned up there, in '84, everyone thought I was Australian (no relation, but was actually born in Windsor) .. after about a year and with my accent sounding strangely kind of mid-Atlantic, which is pretty much Australian, then everyone decided I sounded English!
Guess it's darn cold there now, huh? Europe too, chucking down snow. They picked a poor week for a climate summit.
gday the_guv, welcome to the forums! Good site to find some friendly help!

@guv, yes Pennsylvania is very beautiful and kudos for knowing some of the history of 'Penns woods'!
We are getting whalloped by a storm right now, lots of snow and cold, but I live this kind of weather.
Looking forward to getting to know you better on the boards in the future, hopefully you stick around :-)
