    You can use /sbin/mkfs.vfat tool. I think it's FAT32 ( but don't quote me on that though ) and mkfs.msdos is FAT16.

    Crap ...

What is the partition size limit on FAT32? (According to the info here : http://www.project9.com/fat32 it should be 2 Terabytes. I'm trying to format a 70GB partition and mkfs.vfat gives me "Attempting to create a too large filesystem". I couldn't format it from DOS, it recognized the partition as 10GB. What's going on here?

    Re: Formatting Fat32 partition

Did you created primary partition of 70 GB with FDISK??

Did your BIOS see the whole 70 GB drive??

What allow a single large partition is the software emulation from the drive vendor. Check for your vendor's site for utilities and use them if you can especially you are working with FAT32.

DOS ( including 7.2 ) do not allow drives larger than 16 GB. That's the limitation of DOS ( and all DOS based OSes unless the software emulation is used ).

If the drive is Seagate or Maxtor, they both have excellent utilities that can boot off of floppy. You might like to go that route.

    Re: Formatting Fat32 partition

Here's the deal: I'm setting up Linux on a 80GB hard drive to act as a samba file server for a Windoze network. 10GB is dedicated to the system and 70GB would be the file storage. The BIOS recognized the hard drive as 80GB, I was able to partition it with cfdisk no problem. I was even able to format the 70GB partition as resierfs, however it needs to be a FAT32 since it will only be used by the samba network. I'm just not able to format it for FAT32.
