creating vertual users

Dear All,

I am finding out a way of creating virtual (or what ever name) users in a Linux sendmail server that cant log using that username (not the no login shell method) but only see the mailboxes inside a one users (already created) home directory.

I have seen that kind of a mail server and I have searched I couldn’t findout the methods of doing that?

Is there any way of doing this?

I have never heard of that, but I am sure there is some method to do so. But I refuse to use sendmail, and stick with postfix. Sendmail is merely a test to ones anal retentiveness, rather than a better mail service

If it is possible in sendmail, hit up their listserv and ask there or read up on their website for instructions on how to do it. The next best two ideas would be to hitup your distro's site and irc channel. Red Hat's IRC has some Gurus that know sendmail rather well and could at least point you how to do it.

This is possible by assigning nologin shell to a user account instead of a normal bash etc. This is done by the following command:

useradd -s /sbin/nologin <username>

wel i guess user should be added first even if he is virtual user he should be added with the no login shell
then only he can be able to access the mail with out usin the no login command if any one hav other solution plz mention it here nw even i want to knw how it is possible

Never seen it in Sendmail, but it's an option in Postfix to use virtual mailboxes/users via MySQL. There are tons of how-tos out there for doing this, but most are distro specific.

Any body knows doing this with dovecot (pop/imap) server, I tried this using http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualUsers But at that time sendmail gives an error says unknown user ..... and ignoing to send mail to server.
