If an ip address is and mask is 250.255.248 what is the the total number of hosts? Can anyone explain what is the solution?

Do you mean on the subnet? Look at this link

That should tell you the amount of hosts for each subnet mask.

Hmmmm....well, based on my understanding, and from what I can see, this subnet mask does not work. But when someone asks a question like this, sometimes there is a reason beyond common usage.

    Here are my thoughts:

    IP Address:

    Subnet Mask: 250.255.248

With the network and broadcast bits excluded, you might possibly get 1 host mathematically (in the 10. octet), but I don't think it would be functional.

My understanding is that none of the rest would matter because the firmware and/or software would not understand the reasserting of network bits, once a host bit has been introduced. Also, I think this mask would be rejected by any platform that was not specifically designed to work with this numbering scheme, as it is uncommon and unorthodox in the existing, commonly used, network numbering paradigm.

If however, what you mean is:

    IP Address:

    Subnet Mask: 255.255.248
    11111111.11111111.11111000.00000000 (21 mask bits; 13 subnet bits)

    Then you answer is:
You have 8192 Subnets with 2046 host addresses ranging from: to

    Your network ID is
    Your Broadcast Address is

Although keep in mind that this is a highly customizable address range.
