Yehaaa ... my first successful cdrecord at linux

Yup, I've made it ... I burned my first CD under linux ...
Stupid me has forgotten to install a gui frontend for cdrecord so I had to try the console version of cdrecord.

    I have only one problem...if it is a problem, I don't know.
If I try to burn a cd as a normal user, all I get is:

    Code:
    black666@starbase:~/downloads> cdrecord -v -eject speed=8 dev=0,0,0 -data binary-i386-2.iso
    Cdrecord 1.11a19 (i686-suse-linux) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling
    TOC Type: 1 = CD-ROM
cdrecord: Operation not permitted. WARNING: Cannot do mlockall(2).
cdrecord: WARNING: This causes a high risk for buffer underruns.
cdrecord: Operation not permitted. WARNING: Cannot set RR-scheduler
cdrecord: Permission denied. WARNING: Cannot set priority using setpriority().
cdrecord: WARNING: This causes a high risk for buffer underruns.
cdrecord: Operation not permitted. shmctl failed to lock shared memory segment
The same command as root and everything works fine. Do I have to be root in order to burn a cd? Or am I missing something?

Write access to /dev/cdrom or whatever is restricted to root by default. THis is a good thing usually. You can chmod those dev points that will let your normal users burn CD's.

    How can I do that?
I'm just curious...I don't know if I really want to do that, because this default setting is there for a reason, I think

You could set the SUID bit on cdrecord.

chmod 777 /dev/cdrom or some such...

Black666, this could be a dumb question, but did you used to (maybe u still do) post on mcsebraindumps.com? I remember a black666 there was taking the tests about the same time as me and always had some good info on the tests... just wondering, if it is, Thanks man

Yup. The Black666 on mcsebraindumps was/is exactly me! ;D
Fascinating how small the world is

Btw: I only take a look there from time to time because I now have my MCSA & MCSE, I think I know my stuff pretty well and it's time to move on. Now it's linux time.
As a matter of facts I enjoy learning for linux much more than learning for MCSE

Hey me too, thats why Im here Well actually I've been using Linux for like 2 years now but full time only for about 8 months. Love it! An intelligent MCSE would definetly love linux, you get to see so much more about how an OS actualy works than you ever do in M$. Have fun and good luck!

PS-- check out the IRC channel sometime-- #ljr on irc.openprojects.net

*snicker* I'm an MCSE as well, and next month I should be an RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer). Maybe after that I might look into other Linux certs...
