what is the path of .desktop file

I want to make a desktop lanucher....
i have created a GUI application in which i edited .desktop file where

Name=Base ball
Type= Application
ExEc=/usr/bin
Icon= baseball.png
Comment=A Simple Base Ball Game
Categories=Application;Game
..........................
...............
...........
Then where do i keep .desktop file show that the baseball lanuncher will show in the
Application->Game->Baseball

like Application->Programming->Kdevelop in the menus.
And it should be portable for every distributions of linux...

Is there any file where all the desktop application information are stored.

On the Ubuntu rig I am near, /usr/share/applications is the folder to look at.
