Thread: Debian Woody

    Debian Woody

    I jigdo'd woody. Installed fine. Whenever I try startx, I get a "screens not found" error, and X kills itself. I've tried running XF86config, but I've never actually had to set up X before since I've only really used Mandrake before, so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or not, but it doesn't solve it. I've tried reading SAMS linux unleashed since it does have some on debian, but it didn't help any.
    Anyone have any idea what I can do to get X to work?

    My hardware is:
    ATI All-In-Wonder 128
    USB Mouse
    104 key keyboard

    Which xserver are you using? xserver-xfree86? This is X4, the latest version of X.

    I'll bet that you haven't looked at /etc/X11/XF86Config\(\-4\)? yet, have you? The default version doesn't always work. You should edit that file, especially the sections concerning your video card.

    Re: Debian Woody

    Last time I installed Debian I really had problems with xdm so I switched to kdm. Also had to use dpkg-reconfigure [X~whatever]

    Yeah, setting up X WIndows under Woody can be a pain. To get mine to work, I had to cold reboot like 3 times after configuring it to get the setting to take. Sounds strange but, after that, it worked flawlessly.

    try editing your XF86Config-4 file and comment out this line:

    _____________________________________________

    Option "UseFBDev" "True"
    ______________________________________________

    thats what i had to do to get X to work after i got the same error.

    Try adding an ATI section in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, e.g.:
    Code:
    Section "Device"
     * Identifier "ATI All-in-Wonder 128"
     * Driver * * "ati"
    EndSection
    And then make sure the "Screen" section below it is using that device, e.g.:
    Code:
    Section "Screen"
     * Identifier "Default Screen"
     * Device * "ATI All-in-Wonder 128"
    # ...the rest of the file after this...

    Already had tried that, didn't help any.

    Not installed. *Can I apt-get it? *If so, what's the package name? Also, how do I shut down from CLI? I tried shutdown -h now, but it said it was an unrecognized command...so I just powered off. No big deal since I'm going to keep trying to reinstall it anyway, but if I ever get it working...
