Ok, new to linux of any sort so I picked Ubuntu to play with. I installed the server using the LAMP option and have gotten apache and php to work just fine. Even installed Phpmyadmin without a problem. The problem I am having is setting up the default web server. I left the default site in the var/www directory. the problem I run into is I use my normal login to ftp into the server to place files there. of coarse the files I create make me the owner and so the server can not run them. I changed the owner/user of the directory to www-data same for apache. Without using chmod everytime I upload a file, how can I make sure files that I put up there have at least 755 permission mask so that they can be executed? Thanks in advance for any help.
Ok, think I have solved my problem. It appears that I had the ftp program setup to have a default umask (still learning this) set of a default of 077 and when I changed it to 022 (read other places on this) it looks like it has gotten me started back in the right direction. Thanks google
