It seems this gentleman had to apply a patch to the latest alsa driver in order to get his card to work.
However, it seems the patch has already been merged on the latest release.
My recommendation is to download the latest version of alsa form their website, and then install it following the instructions found here:

I know you already said that the instructions were confusing. If you post exactly what is confusing you, I'd be happy to help.
