# Thread: Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

1. ## Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

I was reading up on Einstein's Special Relativity and I came accross this. I solved it earlier today and don't believe that 98% of the world supposidly can't do this. So please try it if you have ten minutes free or your bored and looking for something to do. Heres the questions

Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *
Einstein wrote this quiz last century. He said that 98% of the people in the world cannot solve the quiz.

There are 5 houses in 5 different colors
In each house lives a person with a different nationality
These 5 owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar, and keep a certain pet
No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar or drink the same drink.
Here's the question: Who owns the fish?

1. The Brit lives in a red house
2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets
3. The Dane drinks tea
4. The green house is on the left of the white house
5. The green house owner drinks coffee
6. The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds
7.The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill
8. The man living in the house right in the middle drinks milk
9. The Norwegian lives in the first house
10. The man who smokes Blend lives next door to the one who keeps cats.
11. The man who keeps horses lives next door to the man who smokes Dunhill
12. The owner who smokes Blue Master drinks beer
13. The German smokes Prince
14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house
15. The man who smokes Blend has a neighbor who drinks water

With these 15 clues the problem is solvable.

2. ## Re: Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

I'd say the fish owner is the Norwegian. A few of the clues are kind of ambiguous, though. For example:
The green house is on the left of the white house
Does this mean the green house is directly next door or just somewhere left of the white house. I used the latter definition

also:
The Norwegian lives in the first house
Which house is the first house? I said the far left house.

3. ## Re: Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

i'm pretty sure it assumes the houses are as follows
1 *2 *3 *4 *5

and yes the green house is directly left to the white house.
Ofcourse these are just assumptions I made but I was able to get the answer. and no it wasn't the Norwegian.

4. ## Re: Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

this logistic knot, again, represents a euro-centric view of the world.
i agree with Agar; Einstein probably meant the house on the left would be the first house.
does that make the house farthest left the first house? i don't think that it does.
this puzzle can be solved if you make assumptions (i.e. knowing Einstein's background) about the knots.
without making assumptions one cannot unravel the riddle.

5. ## Re: Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

good point and Welcome to the board!

6. ## Re: Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

I didnt know the answer until I hit my head on the desk. Then, for some reason I realized I had all the pets accounted for. The german has the pet fish.

7. ## Re: Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

Good mental game, gee, I wonder who it gets the fish. My answer comes so subtly within the first sentence. Prolog could easily solve this puzzle.

8. ## Re: Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

I didnt know the answer until I hit my head on the desk. * Then, for some reason I realized I had all the pets accounted for. *The german has the pet fish. *
yup the german did have the fish.

I'm not sure how you worked yours out but the way I did mine the fish was the very last thing I found.

9. ## Re: Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

Now that I think of it a large percentage of the world is uneducated and others are too impatent and get frustrated with things like this. So that 98% sounds a little high but it may be true.

10. ## Re: Einstein's Intelligence Quiz *

and yes the green house is directly left to the white house.
Say the houses are arranged in the order
1 2 3 4 5
then 1 is on the left of 5 (as well as 2-4) and that was the assumption I made. If Einstein meant directly on the left (such as 4 is to 5 and 1 is to 2) then he should have said so and I'll have to re-work the problem.
