I'm looking for a simple script to compare MS Word student assignment files against previously submitted MS Word files to check for duplications.

You should place all the word documents on your hard disk and use:

1. Google desktop
2. The regular Windows "Search" utility. Use the "Documents (Word processing spreadsheet, etc.)" option, then click on advanced. Put
   
   • ".doc" as the "All or part of the document name" box and
   • the suspicious string of text in the "A word or phrase in the document" box.

Google desktop is probably better. It is much easier to use as there are less options and it does a good job of searching for unusual strings of characters.

Maybe you could arrange the files in directories arranged by year with sub directories arranged by course name / number. That should make the documents easier to file.
