Which USB wireless card?

Please tell me all about your USB wireless card and how easy it was to set up.

Going on a trip and I want to take the old laptop, you know the one, no built-in wireless?

A little help here, can't afford a new l'top.

I really didn't have much luck with my USB wireless Dongle in Linux. I really wouldn't recommend trying cause it wouldn't of been worth all the effort I put into it even if I got it working.

If you can stomach Windows for the trip it will work fine.

I've had much success with D-link's usb dongles on ndiswrapper. Pretty straight-forward install. Just follow the readme included

Thanx, I am not to sure about ndis, I will be playing with it. and I have yet to see my usbwireless card mentioned anywhere.

Have you seen any tutorals on ndiswrapper?

Well now I know that my usbwireless thingy will work with Linux.

Guess its up to me to finger out how to do it.

Alright... Rule #1: Don't compute angry.

Let's try this... If I recall correctly, you tried using this USB wireless thingy AFTER you installed Linux. The thing is... If your Linux distro has a good install script, it 'configured' your system accoring to what it saw at the time of installation. What this means is that: your current system doesn't really 'know' anything about how to use the USB wireless card. Given this, I'd suggest reinstalling your distro (after a backup, if you stand to loose any files you created), while the USB wireless card is plugged in. In theory; the install script will see the USB wireless, and 'configure' it for your system.

If that doesn't work, You'll need to find a different distro that will work with your USB wireless card

. Bummer, I know. But, short of being a Linux configuration guru/wizard/know-it-all, these are the options you're lookin' at. Hope this helps put ya in the right direction my friend :mrgreen: . Peace out 8) .
