you can restart your x server by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Backspace . its not technically a reboot.
 Dumb question 10 million and one -- When a console tty (i.e. tty03 ) freezes, how does one go about resetting it to function once again without a reboot?
TIA
Everything I learn gives me another way to say \"OOPS!\"

Doesn't work on the plain vanilla mingetty 'F-Key-1, 3, 4' and so on console terminals of SuSe Linux 8.1.
Thanks anyway.
Anyone else?

You could try to
Example in the console
------------ -------------------
ps -A
This command will list all processes that are currently running.
Looks like this
-------------------
bash-3.00# ps -A
PID TTY TIME CMD
461 tty1 00:00:00 bash
463 tty2 00:00:00 agetty
464 tty3 00:00:00 agetty
465 tty4 00:00:00 agetty
467 tty5 00:00:00 agetty
468 tty6 00:00:00 agetty
Then just find the process that has locked up and
kill 464
So we have now killed tty3

Thank you comtux.I could then go to /sbin and restart the getty or, will the O/S daemons do that :?:
