scandisk doesn't backup anything, it scans the drive for errors, yes XP does have scandisk.
For backups, there's Backup program as well, should be in system tools under accesories.
The really old computer that died on me got replaced with a newer one that has windows XP professional.
I was wondering a few things about xp pro - is there a scan disk like program and is there a good way to backup the hdd incase the OS gets screwed up>

I know that scandisk dosn't do backups but I can't find the dad gummed thing.
Would this bakcup program in accessories be able to put hte backup on a CD so i can keep it safe if I ever loose my data?
Honestly I never used the Backup program in XP, or any windows to that effect. I always burn CDs/DVDs of my data. I have heard that the backup program can burn on discs but I'm not sure. You'll have to look at the program.
I'm not on XP right now, I could've confirmed it if I were.
The thing i'm afraid of is the os getting screwed up and me not having a reinstasll disk
The computer came without the re-install CD? The OEM CD costs 50 bucks when you buy a computer, you should've spent that much extra and got the CD. Maybe you can still get it.
Or you could use third party programs that creates exact ISO image of your whole hard drive. Acronis True Image is one good software that does the job. I heard lots of good things about it but never used it. True Image can also save the image on cd-r or rw.
I think the trial version is available at websites like download.com. Give it a try and let us know as well.

I have my OEM XP Pro too, but not all computer manufacturers include XP CD, but it can be requested.
