I have configured OpenSSL with apache.I wanted to know whether the SSL certificates are same in case of windows and linux or they vary from environment to environment.
In case of shared ssl, the certificates we use are of hosting company. These certificates are self signed certificate of those companies or this term means that the certificates are owned by the companies and are generated by the third party.
The concept of the SSL certificates remains the same, but the actual certificates are different for Windows (IIS) and Linux (Apache). The certificates may be migrated from one to another by changing some formats (you can find a lot of tips for the same at www.thawte.com).
Shared SSL by hosting providers may be self signed by the hosting companies themselves, but some companies do install certificates purchased from a reputed / trusted third party Certificate Authority. In either case, the certificates remain the property of the Hosting provider.
