Installing

I am installing Windows XP on my freinds computer becasue his computer crashed. Everything goes fine untill the serial key part. I put in my serial key and it says it is invalid. I have cheaked it and it is case sensitive. How can I fix this? :blink: :huh:

If you are using an OEM cd to install windows XP, it is likely that the OEM disc and serial key are only valid for the pc it came with, as in it is locked down to the hardware configuration of the PC it was intended for.

But I bought it seperate from my computer. I put my computer together myself.

Then you need to refer to where you bought the cd, and inquire as to why your cd key does not work

You can only install XPP a limited number of times. Each time you install and activate it it counts down. You can uninstall it on one machine and reinstall it on another. Did you write down the serial number (maybe it is copied wrong) or are you entering it from the cd sleeve?

I have an OEM CD that came with my machine, although I have modified my machine and formatted many times, all I have to do is call Microsoft and they give me the activation code over the phone. As long as you actually own a legitimate copy of Windows, there is no reason why you can't call and activate Windows like I do. I hope your talking about the activation part, if not then you have a pirated key, or what Warrior said, it’s locked down.
