high availability web server solution?-- two nodes

I read some introduciton to building web servers with LAMP. It seems all the articles talk about how to build a web server on a SINGLE machine.

I have a cable modem access to my ISP, and want to build a 'poor' man's webserver--by taking advantage of all the hardware I have, one server and one desktop.

If I have two machines, one (relatively) high-end server, one low-end desktop, and I want to take advantage of the available desktop to build a server, both for increasing availability and processing power, is there any existing solution for that?

is there any book that systematically teach from hardware construction software installation to administration?

I don't know of any. You'd probably have to get a book on hardware, and then a book on installation for the particular distribution you are planning to use, and make sure it includes LAMP setup.
However, if you are willing to do the legwork, all the information is freely available on the net. Also, I am sure everyone here would be willing to help troubleshoot any problems you might encounter.

This book is NOT everything you need but cover some ground of what you need. Preview version is available so you can see if it suits you.
