    Need Info on High Availability

Our top management wanted to implement high availability database server and I cant seem to picture out on what to do and what to implement.

    Plan:
    - 2 Linux Severs will reside on 2 different location about 200 miles apart
    - 60 seconds max downtime
    - Both database should be synchronize
    Problem:
    - What type of database configuration?
    - How to synchronize the 2 database?
    - Is a 60 second downtime achievable if the database crashes?

Are all of these things possible? If someone could shed some light on this it will be a great help.

BTW .. I also dont have much idea on what hardware to use, if you can share it then a big thanks to you ..

It depends what database software you are using. With Oracle, we use Standby's servers, which I guess are Oracle propietary software. It allows fall back into another server that it update with all the transactions at a particular interval. We also use an oralce cluster, where requests load balance between 2 servers, and if one goes down, the other picks up the queries, transparent to the user.
Oracle is really expensive, though. I am not sure if there is anything ismilar for other db's.

Not knowing your full architecture, I would say 60 sec is unrealistic. Also, as mentioned above, with Oracle dataguard, if you need a tiny lapse in log switches, you assume higher resource overhead for the production database.

Here's a howto for something similar with MySQL.
