    Changes Coming to the Foo

w00t. So this move to our roots has caused me to pause and think... and I think I've decided to switch the board to VB.

I should be able to purchase a license at the beginning of July, and over the course of the next month or so if you can bear with us... we'll be doing some construction at the foo and putting in a full, nice VB portal.

If you'd like to help out in ANY way, let me know.

The blogs are back. You can click the links at the top to get to them. I'll be adding the other goodies (such as the links in the profiles and what not over the rest of the week).

I recommend trying the e107 project. I am running it on my website (http://tyler.l2p.net) and you can see it in action. It has the capabilities of most CMS systems, it is easy to use, and best of all, it is open source!

What does VB have over phpBB? Just curious.

Are we going to lose all the old posts?

Well, for starters, you buy a license (either out right or you lease one) which gets you support. The phpbb support is limited to the phpbb community. Which, while it is quite good, isn't always on top of bug fixes and other support request.

There are a number of hacks (portals, blogs, Torrent Trackers, Albums and more) for VB. Most of which have been professionally developed.

Its a faster, more reliable board, with a better security record. Incase you haven't noticed, phpBB isn't the most secure thing in the world (though that is partly my fault).

Its what most of the big sites use (linuxquestions, justlinux and a ton of other sites), not that we're a big site by any means, but I plan to transfer the stuff at tinyminds.org over to linuxfoo, and generate more traffic. I have two book reviews for the foo that are in the works, and we'll be adding some distro reviews and what not to the site. I'm looking at increasing the traffic and it looks like VB will hold what I need it to.

The import of phpbb to VB should go smoothly, at least where the user info and the posts are concerned. the albums, KB articles, and the blogs may not all transfer, however, I will not remove the old DB until I have EVERYTHING I want in the new one. You can ask snct, I'm not that unfamiliar with changing boards, there was a point where it would change monthly... (remember Ikonboard??)

The way the foo is currently, will be the way it is until EVERYONE is satisified with the development site I establish.....

Sounds good Mark, let us know when we can look at the development site. I look forward to it.

Ah yes. Those were the days! Save your own post (if you wanted them saved at all, that is ) . Different layouts and content. Lost smileys. Daisys all over the place... Mass hysteria!

Mark is living proof that practice makes perfect. And now I would follow him anywhere over the internet 8) . I even remember the early days of VB... They've really become one of the best online softwares out there (talk about handling HUGE sites). This will be an excellent move, I think .
