I want to download java 5.0 from Sun site but instead of java a small executable file is downloaded which fails to run.I have tried to download both linux and windows versions of it but for both of the I could not.(linux version on linux and windows version on windows)
I need both windows and linux versions.

You want to download the self extracting .bin file for the JRE or SDK, which includes the JRE. Once you do that, chmod 700 the downloaded file and run it.
# ./jre-1_5_0_07-linux-i586-rpm.bin
It should automatically install the RPM after you agree to the terms.
