    How Much RAM for Squid

Hi. I'm setting up a box running Debian and Squid for a client that has around 40-45 users, and can't seem to find any tips on how much RAM I should put in it. Everything I find tends to tell me that I need as much as I can, which isn't really that helpful.

A bit of background on the client. As I said, 40-45 users. They use a couple of sites to exchange architectural drawings, pdfs, etc, and they do a bit of browsing. Mail is all handled by an internal Exchange server, which will not go through the proxy. Connection is 1024/1024 SHDSL, possibly going up to 2048/2048. I would characterise their internet usage as at the lower scale of high, mainly due to uploading of drawings, pdf's, etc. I will be blocking Limewire, etc at the SHDSL modem, as we've had trouble with people clogging up the link downloading bloody Harry Potter movies!

So, can anyone give me an idea of a starting point for RAM, given this scenario? If I had, say, a Pentium 4 1.7 box, 60GB HDD, and 512MB RAM, is that going to be underpowered for the job? I know that it's a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question, but just your thoughts would be good.

    Thanks.

I'd say at least 1 G of RAM if everything else is going to go through squid especially if you have users who shows the likelyhood of going to all those sites to download stuff. Although you can always add more RAM as needed as long as you have a slot open for it, RAMs now adays are cheap, so .... yeah a gig would be a good starting point I'd say.

Cool, thanks Compunuts. Just found a newish PC, 3.2GHz P4, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD. Got room for at least another gig of RAM, so should do the trick.
