    What programs do you use?

Okay, I admit. I can't resist the temptation of being the first to post on new shiny forum.

When in very rare case of I'm on Windows box, I use

    Thunderbird for Mail
    Firefox for Web
Windows good ol' Command Prompt with OpenSSH installed into it for Admin
    GIMP for graphic
    NVU for WYSIWYG webpage editing
OpenOffice 2.0 for office need (just to keep in sync with my Linux counterpart)
I used to use Dia for drawing but I hardly use it anymore.

What else do I really need for normal power user stuff?

I prefer Emacs, but vi is everywhere, so I generally end up using that.

    Well, it could be.

More and more companies are deploying IM protocols for instant communication in addition to email. Admit it, email is slow and you don't know when the other party will read it. But IM usage had been hinder by the requirement of Serbane-Oxery (or something similar) law to have communication logs.

As for me, I hardly chat anymore. If I do chat, it is usually at home so my choice is either licq or bitchX.

One basic Unix tool that I could not find a Windows replacement for was the 'cat' command.
I finally found a version of cat for windows. Sure made my life easier. I was able to script appends of many small files into one large for analysis with a SAS pgm. It worked for me. I keep 'cat' on my tool cd now so I always have it.
