    Funny question: you have a linux box, you want to test if your soundblaster works, but you don't have any audio files and you can't get any. How would you test your soundblaster? Once I was put into such a situation and I wasted a couple of hours trying to find a workaround. I'm curious if anyone would suggest something original. Next time when I'll be online I'll post what I did.

    heh....

    Just like: I have a stereo system, and I want to test it, but I don't have any music :/ or I got a car but I don't have gas to get it for a drive.

    Put a MIC in it and see if it works...
    or
    cat /dev/random /dev/audio
    or
    cat /dev/random > /dev/audio
    or
    cat /dev/gpmdata > /dev/audio

    If you have internet connection, visit www.rollingstone.com and C-Net for free live music and check your SB to see if you get any sound out of it..

    Or if you have a CD-ROM, play a CD-audio on it.

    Sounds funny, but first thought was that I'm not smart enough for typing a piece of some simple audio file.
    That's because I know a guy who used to type the loader code to Master Boot Record by memory using Diskeditor.
    Finally I did something similar that you suggested:
    $ cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
    Well, it didn't sound like music, but at least I heard something.
