I'm running Red Hat Linux 9 on a PII Celeron @ 450Mhz w/ 128M of RAM with about 40G hard disk. When I try to start some basic applications like Ximan Mail or whatever (even a terminal window) these things take forever to start. In some cases (like Ximan Mail) it can be over 10 seconds before even a logo appears on the screen, which then disappears and even longer before the application finally shows up.

What can be done to boost basic workstation style performance on a RH 9 basic system?
