One area is the color scheme. It is really bland.
Would anyone be willing to do a mock up of a scheme that would be more interesting?

Heh, eh, no seriously. I could do some mockups, but I am so back logged right now, I probably couldn't get to it for a couple of weeks. There must be some VBulliten themes that you can use for a little while, yes?
I took jro's advice and did some hunting. The vbulletin.org site had a number of freely available, attractive skins. The main thread is (sorted by rating):

Suggest some from the first three pages and we can then take a vote on it. Remember, the skin has to be for version 3.5.3.
