Problems with PCMCIA ports on legacy laptops

Hello. I will apologize beforehand for what is a whopper of a first post. I have a fierce technical problem that I've been troubleshooting for a month, so this speech (to paraphrase the Beastie Boys) will sound well rehearsed.

In short, I have two pre-Pentium III laptops that cannot sense or won't acknowledge the presence of PCMCIA cards. I'm hoping I can find someone who has run into this problem before, or might be able to suggest a solution.

Here is the long version of the story, and I will credit you with the patience of a saint if you stick with me to the end.

First, both of these machines are using Ubuntu 5.10 with the 2.6.12-9 kernel. (The same problem occurred under DSL 2.1b and 2.2RC1) I've tried three different PCMCIA cards:

a Belkin Wireless G model F5D7010 version 5,
a Linksys WPC54G version 2, and
a SanDisk CF card adapter.

In two different laptops:

a CTX EzBook 700E, upgraded to a K6-III 475Mhz, 128MB RAM and a 20GB 5400rpm hard drive, and
a Compaq Presario 1020 ... 120Mhz, 48Mb, 1.08Gb

The CTX uses the Texas Instruments PCI1131 cardbus, and the Presario uses the Cirrus Logic 5760 (that might not be the right number -- I can double-check that if you like).

As you can see, neither of these machines is a real speed demon, and aside from the non-stock additions I've made, the hardware is specific to 1997-1998 technology. I only mention that because I think it is an issue.

Neither of those two machines will acknowledge a PCMCIA card when it is inserted. The output of an lspci, lshw or lspci -v command gives only the connecting hardware info. By comparison, putting the same card into my Dell XPS M170 yields this line. ...

Which, if I understand it correctly, is the way it should show up. (Of course, the Belkin wireless card and the CF card have slightly different entries, but you should get the picture.)

To complicate things further, all three cards will work perfectly on the EzBook 700E when installed (with the proper drivers, of course) under Windows XP. (The Compaq won't run WinXP and I don't have the patience to wade through earlier versions of Windows. I think you can sympathize.)

Keep in mind that no drivers are installed, and ndiswrapper is not in use. I have tried full Ubuntu installs on the EzBook, added ndiswrapper-utils and it simply reports that the driver is present, but the hardware is not installed.

I've also tried the PCMCIA tool that comes with DSL, but I believe it's just a GUI for cardctl, and has no better success.

I tried the acpi=off trick described here, but it was only moderately successful. I found that, after modifying the GRUB command line, I could get ident and info out of cardctl, but only for the CF card reader, and only on the Presario. I also had trouble mounting the card.

Frustrating, to say the least, but a step in the right direction. Apparently there are some known situations where the PCMCIA card is undetected, but these seem unique to other hardware, other kernels or other configurations. I don't think it's a bug; I think it's some sort of quirk of legacy systems.

I built a custom kernel for the Compaq that stripped out anything made after 1993, and included anything I could think of that might improve PCMCIA support. But apart from speeding things up slightly, I had no better success than when I attached the acpi=off flag to my GRUB command line.

As a troubleshooting measure, I used the Ubuntu 5.10 Live CD in my father's Inspiron 8000, and aside from configuring his Linksys WPC11 to sign on to the WLAN, there was no problem whatsoever. The same PCMCIA card was ignored in the EzBook 700E ... except in Windows, of course.

I've seen the bug report for PCMCIA in Linux 2.6, and the problem with port subordination, but adding pci=assign-busses to the kernel boot line did nothing. (Of course, it probably post-dates this kernel

)

I think my next step will be to recompile a kernel that strips out the inner PCMCIA structure, and rebuild it using Card Services for Linux. I saw a post or two there that seemed similar to my problem.

If you're still with me, you're probably wondering if cardmgr is running, or would like to see the output of dmesg. Well, you're in luck!

These come from the CTX EzBook 700E. Just as a reminder, this is a socket 7 machine that came stock with 64MB and a Pentium II 233Mhz processor. It has been upgraded to a K6-III 475Mhz and 128MB RAM. It is built as a dual boot WinXP and a Ubuntu 5.10 server install, now with the original 2GB Toshiba 4200rpm hard drive (gawd that drive is SLOW and LOUD).

The card is inserted. This model has an indicator light to show the presence of a card in either socket. The card works perfectly under Windows XP, when the drivers are installed.

Ndiswrapper is not running or installed. Again, I don't believe it will come into play until the device can be detected.

This seems to show your system is seeing PCMCIA ports. Try with different ports if you have two (or more).

I don't have my laptop infront of me right now so I can't check but when I was trying to get my system working (Toshiba Tecra 8100 P550, 128MB RAM, 3.4 GB HDD) I had it in the first slot and ndiswrapper just won't see it. When I tried with the second slot, it worked. I don't know how to tell ndiswrapper to use specific port but oh well, it worked.

And also, you need to install ndiswrapper to be able to get your card's driver to be installed. Did you install the driver from Windows installation media such as from WinXP driver CD or Floppy? I have Netgear WP511 card and this POS won't work unless I get the one off their website. The driver on the installation CD won't work. Just a thought ...

It was just a measure to prevent abuse of posing long posts with advertising or something similar. If you needed to post long long posts, you can do multiple posts and it's okay.

Now that is an interesting idea. I don't know why I hadn't thought of it before. I only ever use the top slot (because of the shape of the cards), and I wonder if it has some thing to do with the whole socket 0 setup. Thanks for the idea.

I'll also make a point of getting drivers off the Linksys site. I've seen elsewhere how the bundled drivers cause freezes and lockups.
