Make sure that you are in the directory that the file is located or include the path to the file in the tar command. Also please make sure the file exist.
This is what has happened, it is a long time since I have installed a tar file and I have just forgot how to do the first part. ???
any help will be appreciated.

SkyNet thanks for that I was in the wrong directory.
I untarred it and cannot find which directory to cd too.
When i untarred it I was in home/alan/bin, but when I cd to that directory it says no such file or directory. :'(
If you are in /home/alan/bin then the file/directory that you untar'd will be placed in this directory. Use ls to list the contents of the current directory. Also pwd print working directory comes in quite handy when needing to know the current directory you're in.
