    How to specify DNS servers?

I have a broadband cable connection through Cox Communications in Las Vegas, but anytime I type in a URL or even when I click on one of my bookmarks that I haven't used in a while, it takes like 3 or 4 seconds to look up the DNS info. While this is happening my browser's status bar says "Looking up [domain name]..."

It's not a huge deal but it's kind of a bummer because I want to be able to zip around to various sites quickly.

So my guess is that the default DNS server(s) Cox is connecting me to are just slow to respond. But I've heard there is a way you can specify which DNS server you want to use for browsing. Anyone familiar with how this is done and where I can find a list of servers?

BTW, I'm using Win XP Pro and Firefox 1.0.

Well you can alway edit /etc/resolve.conf
Another idea could be setting up a squid server for caching. That cold be overkill but it can also be a good project for fun.

I'm not running Linux, though. It's just a Win XP home computer with a cable modem. I hope that's not too off-topic, but that's why I put it here.

I don't have XP, but on 2k you
right click on "My Network places" ->properties->right click on the connection->properties->Internet Protocol (TCP\IP) properties
    and then specify the servers.

you need to contact your isp and ask them what their dns server ip addresses are so you could put them in your TCP/IP properties.

    Maybe they are just slow......
